Glossary
The language of search & AI visibility.
Clear definitions of the SEO, GEO, and industrial-marketing terms you'll encounter — written for busy leaders, not search engineers.
Search
- SEO Search Engine Optimization
- The practice of improving a website's visibility in the unpaid (organic) results of search engines like Google and Bing, so the right people find it when they search. Learn more
- SERP Search Engine Results Page
- The page a search engine returns for a query. Modern SERPs mix organic links with ads, maps, featured snippets, and AI-generated overviews — each a different visibility opportunity.
- Featured Snippet
- A highlighted answer box at the top of some search results that quotes a single page directly. Winning one positions your content as the authoritative answer — and often feeds AI overviews too.
- Long-Tail Keyword
- A specific, lower-volume search phrase (e.g. 'stainless steel pressure vessel fabricator Wisconsin') that signals high intent. Industrial buyers search this way, which makes long-tail terms especially valuable.
- Local SEO
- Optimizing to appear in location-based searches and map results — the 'near me' and city-specific queries that drive inquiries to a particular plant, branch, or service territory.
AI & GEO
- GEO Generative Engine Optimization
- Optimizing so a brand is visible and accurately represented inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. The AI-era counterpart to SEO. Learn more
- Answer Engine
- A system that returns a single, synthesized answer instead of a list of links — for example ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews. Buyers increasingly start research here. Learn more
- AI Overviews
- Google's AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional results for many queries. They cite a handful of sources; being one of them is a core GEO objective.
- LLM Large Language Model
- The type of AI that powers tools like ChatGPT. LLMs generate answers by drawing on patterns in vast text, which is why clear, well-structured, corroborated content is easier for them to quote correctly.
- AI Citation
- A reference an AI engine attributes its answer to. Earning citations — and ensuring they describe you accurately — is how you build trust and visibility in generative search.
- Entity
- A distinct, well-defined thing — a company, product, person, or concept — that search engines and AI systems recognize and connect to others. Strong entity signals help models associate your brand with the right topics.
- Knowledge Graph
- A structured database of entities and the relationships between them that search engines use to understand the world. Being a clearly defined entity within it improves both search and AI visibility.
Technical
- Technical SEO
- Optimizing the foundation of a site — crawlability, indexing, architecture, speed, and structured data — so search engines and AI crawlers can access and understand it. Essential for large industrial catalogs.
- Structured Data (Schema)
- Standardized markup (from schema.org) that describes page content to machines — your organization, products, FAQs, and locations. It powers rich results and helps AI engines quote you accurately.
- Crawlability
- How easily automated bots can discover and read a site's content. Poor crawlability — common on large or aging industrial sites — means pages never get indexed, ranked, or cited.
- Core Web Vitals
- Google's metrics for real-world page experience: loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability. They influence rankings and, more importantly, whether visitors stay.
- Authority / Backlinks
- Signals of credibility, including links and references from other reputable sites. Authority helps you rank in search and makes AI engines more likely to trust and cite you.
- E-E-A-T Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness
- Google's framework for evaluating content quality. For industrial firms, demonstrable engineering experience and expertise are real competitive advantages when surfaced correctly.
Industrial & B2B
- Industrial SEO
- SEO built for manufacturers, distributors, and industrial service companies — accounting for large technical catalogs, spec-driven content, long buying cycles, and engineering and procurement audiences. Learn more
- RFQ Request for Quote
- A buyer's formal request for pricing on specified products or services — one of the most valuable conversions in industrial marketing, and a metric we optimize directly toward.
- Qualified Lead
- A prospect that matches your ideal-customer profile and shows genuine buying intent. The goal of industrial SEO and GEO is more qualified leads — not merely more traffic. Learn more
- Conversion
- A desired action a visitor takes — submitting an RFQ, requesting an audit, downloading a spec sheet, or contacting sales. Visibility only matters if it converts into pipeline.
- Buying Journey
- The multi-stage, multi-stakeholder path an industrial purchase takes from first research to final sign-off. Effective content meets buyers at each stage, from an early AI query to a late-stage spec comparison.
